Félix Tshisekedi and AU Facilitators Discuss Peace Initiatives in the Great Lakes Region
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, met on Thursday, January 29, with the African Union’s panel of facilitators to discuss peace initiatives in the DRC and the wider Great Lakes region. According to the Presidency of the Republic, the Head of State commended the facilitators’ efforts and reaffirmed his commitment to a lasting and verifiable peace in eastern DRC. He also reiterated his support for regional stability, in line with the commitments made by all parties. For her part, Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of Ethiopia, stressed the urgency of action to end civilian suffering: “We are on a tour. We will listen to everyone and see what can be done for the well-being of this population, which has suffered greatly for decades. We forget that behind all this, there is human suffering that must be stopped.” The AU delegation included prominent figures such as Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of Ethiopia, and Ms. Catherine Samba-Panza, former President of the Central African Republic.
