European Union Hold Strategic Talks on Political Dialogue and Sahel Cooperation
Bamako, February 17, 2026 - The Government of Mali and the European Union (EU) held a high-level working session on Tuesday aimed at strengthening political dialogue and redefining cooperation in the Sahel, according to official sources.
The meeting brought together Foreign Affairs Minister Abdoulaye Diop and Minister for Malians Abroad Mossa Ag Attaher with a European delegation led by EU Special Representative for the Sahel João Gomes Cravinho, who was on an official visit to Bamako.
Focus on New Cooperation Framework
During what officials described as frank and interactive discussions, Malian authorities emphasized a strategic shift in governance, highlighting the country's determination to ensure national sovereignty, self-determination, and sustainable development.
Minister Diop presented Mali’s new governance vision, stressing the authorities’ commitment to taking control of the country’s political and security trajectory.
Talks focused on several key issues, including:
The EU’s new intervention approach in the Sahel
Ongoing security challenges linked to terrorism
The role of hybrid armed actors and state sponsors
The importance of a confederal dimension in Sahel interventions
Strengthening pragmatic and realistic cooperation
Priority Areas Identified
Both sides discussed cooperation in areas of common interest, including:
Peace and reconciliation under national ownership
Management of regular migration
