Ethiopia Rejects Regional Alliance Concerns, Says Sovereignty Is Not at Risk

ADDIS ABABA, July 8, 2026 - Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has dismissed concerns over a possible regional alliance involving Eritrea, Sudan, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), saying Ethiopia is prepared to defend its sovereignty against any threat.

Addressing lawmakers during the 30th regular session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Abiy said Ethiopia does not fear any combination of regional actors and is strengthening its defence capabilities to protect national interests.

The prime minister’s comments came after reports by regional analysts suggesting a possible tactical alignment between Eritrea, the TPLF, and Sudan, with some comparisons drawn to past alliances that reshaped Ethiopia’s political landscape.

Tensions across the Horn of Africa have increased in recent months as relations between Ethiopia and several neighbouring countries have deteriorated. Relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara have become increasingly strained following disagreements over regional influence and Ethiopia’s efforts to secure access to a Red Sea port.

Ethiopia’s ties with Sudan have also been affected by Sudan’s internal conflict. The Sudanese Armed Forces have accused Addis Ababa of supporting the Rapid Support Forces, while Sudan has responded to alleged cross-border security incidents by reinforcing its military presence along the Ethiopian border.

Abiy also claimed that unnamed external actors were attempting to influence regional developments against Ethiopia, without identifying those involved.

The Ethiopian leader reiterated that his government remains committed to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and maintaining national security amid growing regional tensions.
