DRC Urges Protection Of Education In Sudan Conflict

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Kinshasa, August 9, 2026 - The DRC used an August 7 Arria-formula meeting of the United Nations Security Council to argue that safeguarding education in Sudan is part of conflict resolution, not a measure to be postponed until after war.

Deputy Permanent Representative Jocelyne Kabengele Lukundula spoke at the meeting, which was organized by Somalia and co-sponsored by the DRC and Liberia. She called for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access and inclusive political dialogue.

Kabengele cited the DRC's Child Protection Law 09/001 of 2009, National Education Framework Law 14/004 of 2014 and Education in Emergencies strategy for 2025-2029 as relevant frameworks.

Kinshasa also urged support for continuity of Sudanese education, protection of schools from military use and backing for African Union Peace and Security Council and AU/CIEFFA initiatives.
