DRC: State of siege extended in North Kivu and Ituri, debates over possible extension

On Thursday 2 October 2025 in Kinshasa, the National Assembly and the Senate adopted a further extension of the state of siege in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, despite dissenting voices questioning its effectiveness. MP Daida Moleka, elected representative of Lukunga, argued for its extension to South Kivu, citing the growing activism of armed groups and the M23 rebellion, but this proposal was rejected by several elected representatives, particularly from North Kivu, who questioned the results achieved.

The interim president of the National Assembly, Isaac Jean Claude Tshilumbayi, undertook to forward this suggestion to the government while calling on parliamentarians to strengthen their support for the armed forces in the face of the ongoing security crisis.
