DRC Ministry of Human Rights Reaffirms Presumption of Innocence in Ilemo Mosengo Nzuzi
Kinshasa, January 17, 2026 - The Ministry of Human Rights has issued a statement emphasizing the principle of presumption of innocence in the ongoing case of Ilemo Mosengo Nzuzi, which has recently sparked controversy on social media.
According to the Ministry, the case has been under monitoring by its services since December 20, 2025, and the viral video that circulated on January 14, 2026 is not the trigger for any renewed investigation.
“The liberty of the accused remains a fundamental principle, in accordance with the Constitution, applicable laws, and international human rights standards. Any infringement of this principle constitutes a violation of fundamental rights and freedoms,” the Ministry said in a press release sent to Actualite.CD.
The video in question shows Mosengo Nzuzi appearing weakened while detained in police custody, reigniting public debate over judicial guarantees and the treatment of individuals during criminal proceedings.
The Ministry reminded judicial authorities to rigorously apply the presumption of innocence and uphold the right to liberty during criminal proceedings, except where deprivation of liberty is strictly justified by law.
“Deprivation of liberty is an exception that must be strictly regulated,” the Ministry stressed, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting human rights throughout the justice system.
