DRC Launches New Secure Vehicle License Plate System

Kinshasa, January 6, 2026 - The General Directorate of Taxes (DGI) is set to officially launch a new secure vehicle license plate this Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Kinshasa, marking a major step in the modernization of vehicle registration in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to a statement from the DGI, the new license plate-designed in line with international standards-will replace the old system with the aim of improving road safety, harmonizing the national vehicle registration framework, and facilitating traffic controls across the country.

The tax authority informed the general public, particularly vehicle owners and road users, of this government measure, emphasizing its importance for regulatory compliance and better traffic management.

The DGI is urging all concerned parties to promptly obtain the new license plates, noting that widespread adoption is essential to ensure the full harmonization of the registration system.

This initiative, the DGI added, is part of the government’s broader commitment to modernizing public services, strengthening road safety, and enhancing the efficiency and security of vehicle identification in the DRC.
