DRC Faces Severe Cholera Outbreak: Over 1,700 Deaths and 58,000 Suspected Cases

Kinshasa, October 24, 2025 - The Ministry of Public Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Friday, 24 October 2025, that the country is experiencing one of its worst cholera epidemics in a decade, with more than 1,700 deaths and 58,000 suspected cases recorded since January 2025, representing a fatality rate of over 3%.

While 20 of the 26 provinces are non-endemic, the epidemic is being fueled by floods, conflicts, displacement, and inadequate water and sanitation systems. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has treated over 35,800 patients and vaccinated 22,000 people since January, but efforts are constrained by limited funding, insufficient staff, and coordination challenges.

Authorities and humanitarian partners are being urged to rapidly strengthen medical, logistical, and financial support to contain the outbreak, particularly ahead of the rainy season, which could worsen the crisis. Health experts warn that immediate action is crucial to prevent further loss of life.
