Djibouti Strengthens African Economic Integration Through High-Level AU Talks

Addis Ababa, July 5, 2026 - Djibouti reaffirmed its commitment to African economic integration as Minister of Trade and Tourism Orbis Elaf Orbis held high-level discussions with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission following his participation in the 18th Council of Ministers of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The meeting focused on the outcomes of the ministerial session held in Abuja, Nigeria, where African ministers reviewed progress on the implementation of the AfCFTA, one of the African Union's flagship initiatives aimed at expanding intra-African trade and accelerating the continent's economic integration. During the discussions, Minister Orbis presented Djibouti's perspectives on advancing the agreement and highlighted the opportunities the AfCFTA offers member states, including improved market access, stronger regional value chains, increased investment, and enhanced trade competitiveness. The talks also addressed the implementation of the African Union's Agenda 2063, with particular emphasis on aligning Djibouti's national development priorities with continental objectives. Key areas of cooperation included trade facilitation, infrastructure development, industrialization, economic transformation, and employment creation. For Djibouti, which continues to position itself as a strategic logistics and commercial gateway linking Africa, the Middle East, and global markets, the AfCFTA represents a major opportunity to deepen regional economic integration while diversifying its economy and expanding commercial partnerships across the continent. On the sidelines of the Abuja ministerial meeting, the Djiboutian minister also met with the Secretary-General of the AfCFTA to discuss Djibouti's strategic priorities and explore ways to maximize the country's participation in what is expected to become one of the world's largest integrated free trade markets. The discussions concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthen cooperation between Djibouti and the African Union in support of the effective implementation of the AfCFTA. Both sides emphasized the importance of continental economic integration as a catalyst for sustainable growth, investment, job creation, and long-term prosperity across Africa. The high-level engagements underscore Djibouti's continued support for the African Union's integration agenda and its determination to play an active role in advancing the continent's major economic initiatives.
