Djibouti and Japan Reinforce Agricultural and Fisheries Cooperation

Djibouti, June 9, 2026 - The Minister of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries, Livestock, and Marine Resources, Mr. Radwan Abdillahi Bahdon, received the newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to Djibouti, Mr. Okochi Akihiro, during a high-level meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key development sectors.

The meeting, held at the ministry headquarters, took place in the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry, Mr. Ibrahim Elmi Mohamed, while the Japanese Ambassador was accompanied by members of his diplomatic staff.

Following cordial exchanges, the minister welcomed Ambassador Okochi and extended his best wishes for success in his diplomatic mission in Djibouti. Both sides reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Djibouti and Japan, emphasizing their shared commitment to deepening collaboration in agriculture and fisheries.

Discussions focused on expanding trade and technical cooperation, particularly in the fisheries and agricultural sectors, which both parties identified as strategic areas for national development and economic growth.

A key point of discussion was the importance of capacity building, including the training of Djiboutian engineers and the transfer of Japanese technical expertise to support local fishermen and strengthen value chains. The minister reiterated his ministry’s readiness to fully support initiatives aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and achieving tangible development outcomes.

For his part, Ambassador Okochi Akihiro expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Djibouti. He emphasized Japan’s interest in supporting practical and results-oriented partnerships aligned with shared priorities in sustainable development.

Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming their intention to further consolidate cooperation in strategic sectors, particularly agriculture and fisheries, as part of broader efforts to promote economic development and food security in Djibouti.
