Denmark Assumes UN Security Council Presidency from DRC

New York, United Nations, August 1, 2026 - Denmark officially took over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today, marking the beginning of its term for August 2026. The Danish ambassador to the UN, Christina Markus Lassen, met with the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, to discuss priorities and initiatives for the upcoming month. This transition follows the DRC's presidency in July, during which the country emphasized themes of peace, justice, development, and multilateralism.

During its July presidency, the DRC focused on conflict prevention and peace-building efforts. Notable high-level events included a presentation by Prime Minister Suminwa on conflict-related sexual violence on July 8, and an Arria-formula meeting on July 13 that addressed the intersection of natural resources and conflict, led by Kayikwamba. Additionally, an open debate on natural-resource governance was held on July 22, which was chaired by Kayikwamba after President Félix Tshisekedi canceled his travel plans. The DRC served in the A3 group alongside Liberia, highlighting its commitment to regional collaboration.

As Denmark steps into its role, it is expected to continue addressing pressing global security issues while building on the groundwork laid by the DRC. The transition in leadership at the UNSC reflects the ongoing commitment of member states to foster dialogue and cooperation in addressing international challenges.
