Democratic Bloc Proposes Dialogue And US-Mediated Ceasefire

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Khartoum, August 7, 2026 - Sudan's Democratic Bloc coalition presented a political roadmap built around intra-Sudanese dialogue and a proposed US-mediated ceasefire aimed at ending the civil war. The coalition said the ceasefire track would be designed to halt the fighting permanently, open space for humanitarian relief and support reconstruction.

It also called for a domestic dialogue process that addresses the roots of the conflict while excluding groups involved in abuses against civilians. The Democratic Bloc said it had reached understandings with Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on creating conditions for inclusive dialogue, while arguing that international actors should play a facilitation role rather than drive the process.

The initiative comes amid divisions among Sudanese political coalitions. Somoud and Tasis boycotted consultations organized by an international Quintet Mechanism, citing concerns over participant selection and meeting structures. The fragmentation highlights the difficulty of building a credible political track alongside efforts to stop a war that has displaced millions and destroyed key infrastructure since April 2023.
