Court Ruling Affirms Refugees’ Right To Work

Kampala, August 13, 2026 - A Ugandan court ruling recognising refugee employment as a legal right has renewed focus on how displaced people can move beyond subsistence support and participate more fully in the economy.

The decision is significant for Uganda, which hosts large refugee populations and has long been viewed as one of the region’s more open jurisdictions for displaced communities. Recognition of the right to earn a living strengthens the legal basis for refugees to seek work, build livelihoods and contribute labour and skills to local markets.
