Consolidation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)

Bamako, September 29, 2025 - President Abdourahamane Tiani’s visit to Mali marked a critical juncture in institutionalizing the AES, a new regional security and development bloc designed to address cross-border instability in the Sahel. His arrival at Modibo Keïta-Sénou International Airport was met with full military honors by Malian President General Assimi Goïta, signaling the strategic priority both nations attach to this alliance.

The closed-door discussions focused on three pillars of cooperation:

Integrated Security Architecture - planning intelligence-sharing protocols, standardizing military equipment, and establishing a unified command for cross-border counterinsurgency operations

Economic Sovereignty - finalizing technical frameworks for the AES Investment and Development Bank, including headquarters, operational structures, and governance oversight.

Diplomatic Alignment - harmonizing positions on regional organizations and international forums to consolidate the AES as a coherent political and security actor.

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso -The visit continued with a stop in Burkina Faso to meet Captain Ibrahim Traoré, reinforcing the AES’s tripartite dimension. Discussions emphasized governance, development cooperation, and regional security, signaling that AES ambitions extend beyond military coordination to a holistic Sahelian governance model rooted in sovereignty, stability, and development.
