Complaint Filed Against Mali Before African Court Over Alleged Abuses

Bamako, April 20, 2026 - Three international human rights organizations have filed a complaint against Mali before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, alleging serious violations committed during military operations in the country’s central regions.

The complaint was submitted by Trial International, the African Union of Lawyers, and the International Federation for Human Rights. It focuses on events that reportedly took place in 2022 in the localities of Hombori and Moura, where hundreds of civilians are alleged to have been killed.

According to the organizations, the case raises concerns over the protection of civilians during counterinsurgency operations, as well as allegations of obstruction of justice and the absence of accountability for those responsible.

The applicants argue that the proceedings aim not only to address the specific incidents but also to establish a broader legal precedent regarding state responsibility, particularly in contexts where private or allied military actors are involved in security operations.

Malian authorities have not yet publicly responded to the complaint.

The case is expected to draw significant attention at the continental level, as it touches on key issues related to human rights, accountability, and the conduct of military operations in conflict-affected environments.
