Civilian Coalitions Boycott Sudan Peace Talks In Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, August 2, 2026 - Sudanese civilian coalitions and political groups boycotted planned meetings of the Quintet mechanism in Addis Ababa, exposing fresh divisions over the diplomatic track intended to help end Sudan's war. The Somoud and Tasees coalitions, alongside political parties and civil society organizations, refused to attend after objections to the mechanism's approach.

Western diplomats also raised concerns over efforts by some parties within the mechanism to impose a framework and include political groups whose participation had previously been rejected. Former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who leads the Somoud coalition, said the group supports dialogue but rejects a process in which the mechanism moves beyond facilitation and seeks to shape the talks.

Somoud said ending the war remains the national priority and called for a broad civilian democratic front to restore a civilian transition. The impasse complicates international mediation and delays prospects for a political settlement. For investors and aid actors, the continued fragmentation of civilian and armed stakeholders points to a prolonged transition risk and limited near-term visibility on governance, reconstruction and debt-reform pathways.
