Civil Society Groups Petition Parliament Over Suspensions

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Kampala, August 6, 2026 - Thirty-one civil society organisations have petitioned Parliament over their continued suspension, accusing authorities of abusing administrative powers in the regulation of non-governmental organisations.

The organisations say the suspensions have disrupted civic work and raised concerns about the operating environment for rights groups and other non-profit entities. They want Parliament to intervene and ensure that regulatory decisions are handled lawfully and transparently.

The petition places Uganda's civic space back on the national political agenda. For investors and development partners, the handling of NGO regulation is relevant because civil society groups often monitor governance, public spending, land issues, community rights and service delivery.

The case will test whether Parliament is willing to scrutinise administrative action affecting non-state actors. A more predictable regulatory framework would reduce uncertainty for organisations working with donors, communities and public institutions.
