Civil Figures Launch Domestic Dialogue Initiative To End Sudan War

Khartoum, August 30, 2026 - A coalition of prominent Sudanese civil figures launched an initiative to prepare an internal national dialogue aimed at ending the war, testing whether domestic mediation can gain traction amid deep political distrust.

The move follows General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan's August 14 approval of a domestic framework for talks and his offer to provide legal and security guarantees. Organizers said the new group would operate independently to rebuild confidence among political, civil and community leaders before formal intra-Sudanese negotiations are held inside Sudan.

The panel includes constitutional lawyer Nabil Adib, Ahfad University President Gasim Badri, writer Mohamed Jalal Hashim and editor Osman Mirghani. It called for preliminary talks to define the framework, representation rules and core security safeguards for a credible process.

Several key actors remain opposed. The Somoud Coalition, the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur and Mubarak al-Fadil's Umma Party faction have rejected Burhan's initiative, warning that talks under current conditions could entrench military control. They want the Islamic Movement and its affiliates excluded, while the Democratic Bloc supports broader participation and would exclude only forces allied with the RSF unless they sever ties and condemn violations.

The initiative demands written, verifiable guarantees, including temporary procedural immunity from arrest or prosecution for participants entering Sudan for talks. For investors and diplomats, the effort is significant because any credible political process would be central to restoring institutional stability, reducing sanctions and legal risks, and reopening a path to reconstruction financing.
