Civil Alliance Wary Of Burhan-Led Internal Dialogue
Nairobi, August 11, 2026 - Senior figures in Sudan's Civil Democratic Alliance, known as Somoud, expressed reservations about plans by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan's authorities to establish preparatory committees for an internal Sudanese dialogue. Burhan, head of the Transitional Sovereign Council, has been consulting political blocs, civil groups, Sufi leaders and public figures on convening a conference inside Sudan.
The proposed process would exclude the former ruling National Congress Party and the Rapid Support Forces-linked Tasees Alliance. Somoud leaders remain skeptical, arguing that the military leadership that took power in the October 2021 coup is seeking civilian endorsement and political legitimacy.
The alliance is instead prioritising preparations for the Nairobi Declaration group's founding conference, expected in late October, to consolidate a civilian anti-war front. The alliance's stated platform focuses on a comprehensive peace settlement, a transitional constitution and a unified national security system under civilian authority.
It also rejects any future governance role for the National Congress Party or the Islamic Movement, and calls for a single negotiating platform beginning with a ceasefire and humanitarian access.
