Nyagatare, Rwanda, March 25, 2026 - Chinese investors are set to establish three factories in Nyagatare District, including a transformer manufacturing plant, in a move expected to boost industrial capacity and agricultural production in the region. District authorities said the projects will include two factories producing electrical equipment and one facility dedicated to manufacturing fertilizer from cow dung mixed with other substances. The development follows a March 11 meeting between Eastern Province Governor Pudence Rubingisa and a delegation of Chinese investors who visited the province to assess investment opportunities and explore potential partnerships. After the meeting, the investors traveled to Nyagatare District, where local officials presented a range of opportunities. Several proposals attracted immediate interest, with investors agreeing to move forward without delay. Acting Mayor Kakooza Henry said key areas of interest included the construction of electrical equipment factories and a fertilizer plant. “The first factory will focus on fertilizer production using manure mixed with other substances,” he said. “Another will manufacture electrical equipment, including transformers, while a third will produce wires and related components.” He added that the investors are also looking to expand into agriculture, with plans to grow crops and supply them to markets. One investor has already committed to launching the transformer factory project and is expected to begin construction soon after securing one hectare of land in the district’s industrial park. The investor is currently preparing and is expected to return in April, with construction scheduled to begin no later than August. Other investors have temporarily returned to their home country to finalize internal consultations before proceeding. Meanwhile, development continues at the Rutaraka industrial park, where additional projects are underway, including a chia seed processing plant, an animal feed factory, and a planned coal processing facility. District authorities highlighted that the 256-hectare industrial park is equipped with water and electricity infrastructure, with road development planned to improve access and attract further investment. Chinese investment in Rwanda continues to grow, reaching an estimated $108.6 million in 2024, reflecting strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
