CDM Mining Company Sealed Off Over Environmental Pollution

Lubumbashi, February 4, 2026 - The Ministry of Environment took decisive action against the CDM mining company on Wednesday, February 4, following a catastrophic acid water spill in November 2025. Environment Minister Marie Nyange ordered the suspension of operations, making any resumption contingent on a comprehensive environmental risk assessment.

Incident Spurs Expert Investigation The November 4th incident involved the overflow of an acid water discharge basin, severely polluting Lubumbashi’s environment. In response, the minister established a commission of national and international experts tasked with:

Analyzing technical and structural causes of the spill

Identifying shortcomings in toxic waste management

Proposing sustainable solutions to prevent recurrence and safeguard ecosystems

Compliance With Environmental Standards During a meeting with mining operators in Haut-Katanga, Minister Nyange underscored the government’s stance: industrial development must not compromise environmental standards.

“Our approach aims to establish mining operations that respect environmental standards and comply with the country’s international commitments. Pollution will no longer be tolerated,” Nyange emphasized.
