Cardinal Kambanda Seeks Reopening Of Compliant Places Of Worship

By Sarah Ndaya2 min read

Kigali, August 25, 2026 - Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, Archbishop of Kigali and president of the Bishops' Conference of Rwanda, asked Youth and Arts Development Minister Jean Nepo Abdallah Utumatwishima to advocate for the reopening of churches and mosques that have met official requirements.

Kambanda made the appeal at the close of the Catholic Youth Forum on August 23, saying continued closures make it harder for religious institutions to support young people in their moral and spiritual development.

The forum brought together more than 5,000 young Catholics from nine dioceses under the theme of hope, brotherhood and peace. Kambanda said young people should be treated as a national asset and supported through education, faith formation and community engagement.
