Cabinet Withdraws Contested Internship Policy As Parliament Pushes Pay Increase

By Jean-Marc Okito3 min read

Kampala, August 18, 2026 - Cabinet rescinded a contested internship policy while Parliament pressed for higher pay for the current cohort, keeping public-sector wage and staffing questions on the national agenda.

Under the revised position, interns in the current cohort will receive Shs1,268,929 per month before tax, leaving net pay of about Shs1 million.

The decision resolves an immediate dispute over intern compensation, but it also raises broader questions about budget planning, public-service remuneration and the government's ability to manage labour expectations within fiscal limits.
