Bujumbura, April 26, 2026 - Burundi’s ruling party, CNDD-FDD, has endorsed incumbent President Évariste Ndayishimiye as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The decision was reached during an extraordinary general assembly held on April 26, where party members convened to determine their flagbearer for the upcoming vote.

Among those considered for nomination was the party’s Secretary General, Révélien Ndikuriyo, who reportedly voiced concerns regarding certain programs and their implementation. Despite these internal discussions, the assembly ultimately gave its backing to Ndayishimiye.

Following the endorsement, the president expressed appreciation to party members, known as Abagumyabanga, for their confidence in his leadership.

“I thank the Abagumyabanga for trusting me during this extraordinary meeting and for approving me as the CNDD-FDD candidate for the 2027 presidential elections,” he said. “Together, we will continue these responsibilities so that every Burundian can prosper and succeed.”

Ndayishimiye, who came to power in 2020 after winning the presidential election, is now set to seek a second term in office.
