Bukavu, December 12, 2025 - Thousands of residents of South Kivu Province in the city of Bukavu staged a peaceful demonstration on 23 December 2025, protesting the recent withdrawal of AFC/M23 forces from Uvira.
The AFC/M23 had taken control of Uvira on 9 December 2025 but committed to withdrawing on 15 December in support of the Doha peace process. Many residents expressed concern that the withdrawal could leave them vulnerable.
Miki Mutiki, a representative of SOCIVE, stated, “The people of South Kivu find the way to remove AFC/M23 from the city of Uvira inadequate.”
Governor of South Kivu, Patrick Busu Bwa Ng’wi, acknowledged the concerns of the population, thanking them for their peaceful march. He confirmed that the AFC/M23 will continue efforts to promote peace and engage with all stakeholders to ensure residents can live safely. He also urged Uvira residents to remain strong, promising a visit once the situation stabilizes.
The demonstrators called on both warring parties to respect the ceasefire agreed upon during the Doha talks, highlighting the community’s desire for peace and coexistence.
The march reflected a humanitarian plea from the people of Bukavu, emphasizing their commitment to stability and protection of civilian lives in the region.
