Bobi Wine says he will return to Uganda under safety guarantees

Washington, April 4, 2026 - Washington, D.C., United States, March 25, 2026 - Ugandan opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, has said he is willing to return to Uganda if his safety is guaranteed and he is not subjected to legal proceedings.

Speaking during an interview with France 24, Bobi Wine stated that his return depends on assurances that he can live freely without fear of arrest or persecution.

“I am ready to return to Uganda as long as I am a free person. I cannot return if it is like pleading for my freedom,” he said.

The opposition leader recently arrived in the United States after reportedly going into hiding in Uganda, citing concerns over alleged harassment and abuse by security forces.

Ugandan authorities, however, have maintained that he is not being prosecuted for any crime, suggesting that his time away from the country was a personal decision.

Tensions between Bobi Wine and the government of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni have escalated following the January 15, 2026 presidential election, which resulted in Museveni securing another term in office.
