Bobi Wine Backs Olara Otunnu For UN Secretary-General Bid

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Kampala, August 27, 2026 - Opposition leader Bobi Wine endorsed Olara Otunnu for the United Nations' top post, framing the Ugandan diplomat's candidacy as a rare international opportunity for the country.

The National Unity Platform leader urged Ugandans and UN member states to rally behind Otunnu, despite past political rivalry and tensions within Uganda's opposition landscape.

Otunnu's campaign remains in a fluid global contest among eight candidates. An informal poll during the selection process showed movement in his favor, but did not settle the race.

For Uganda, a credible bid by a former senior international official carries diplomatic value, reinforcing the country's visibility in multilateral affairs at a time of heightened global competition for influence.
