Besigye Trial Hears Nairobi Evidence Was Lost

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Kampala, August 25, 2026 - A prosecution witness told court that recording devices linked to the alleged November 2024 abduction of Dr Kizza Besigye were seized by Kenyan police, raising questions about the evidentiary record in a politically sensitive trial.

Andrew Wilson testified that the devices were taken after the Nairobi incident, leaving the court to weigh claims that potentially relevant material is no longer available.

The trial proceeded in Besigye's absence after medical clearance from Mulago National Referral Hospital, following an earlier episode in which he collapsed in court.

The case remains nationally significant because it involves a leading opposition figure and continues to test confidence in cross-border law enforcement, due process and Uganda's judicial handling of high-profile political cases.
