Bamako Faces Severe Utility Crisis Amid Widespread Power and Water Outages

Bamako, April 2, 2026 - Mali’s capital is grappling with an acute public utility crisis marked by prolonged electricity outages, shortages of drinking water, and sharply rising fuel prices.

Residents of Mali reported more than 24 hours without power in several districts of Bamako, alongside disruptions in water supply systems and growing difficulties in accessing fuel.

The situation prompted an unusual public response from the Minister of Energy and Water, who personally distributed water in the Tabacoro area, an initiative that was welcomed by segments of the population as a gesture of solidarity amid worsening living conditions.

Despite the arrival of hundreds of fuel tankers in the capital, authorities acknowledged that supply levels remain insufficient to meet demand in a city increasingly affected by paralysis across essential services.

The combined shortages have intensified public concern, with transport, household consumption, and economic activity all severely impacted as Bamako continues to face simultaneous pressures on its energy and water infrastructure.
