AU Urges African Countries to Learn from Rwanda in Fighting Corruption

Arusha, Tanzania - The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Council on Corruption and Money Laundering, Kwami Edem Senanu, has called on African nations to take lessons from Rwanda and Botswana in combating corruption and money laundering. His remarks came during the AU Council (AUABC) meeting held in Arusha on November 17, 2025.

The meeting reviewed measures adopted by African countries to fight corruption and money laundering and assessed the results achieved so far.

Senanu highlighted that Africa loses an estimated $125 billion annually to embezzlement, surpassing the combined GDP of many African countries.

Citing the Transparency International report on corruption and governance, he noted that in 2024, Rwanda ranked 43rd globally among countries making progress in tackling corruption. On the continental level, Rwanda was third in Africa, behind Seychelles and Cape Verde, tied with Botswana, both achieving a 57% score in anti-corruption efforts.
