AU Keeps Sudan Suspension On Table After Khartoum Mission

Khartoum, August 24, 2026 - An African Union Peace and Security Council delegation did not discuss lifting Sudan's suspension during talks with military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, keeping the country's regional isolation tied to democratic transition benchmarks.

The delegation, led by Algerian Ambassador Mohamed Khaled, visited Khartoum on August 16 and 17 and met Burhan, Transitional Prime Minister Kamil El-Tayeb Idris, and other senior officials. The discussions focused on implementing recent AU summit resolutions and addressing the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

Sudan has been suspended from the AU since October 2021, when the military seized power and removed the civilian-led government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. The suspension was imposed under the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, which mandates sanctions after unconstitutional changes of government.

Khartoum presented a roadmap beginning with a ceasefire, followed by an inclusive Sudanese dialogue to prepare for a civilian government and general elections. Sudanese officials also made the end of the RSF rebellion and the withdrawal of RSF fighters from civilian infrastructure and public institutions a primary condition for resuming the political process.

The AU delegation emphasized that ending Sudan's suspension depends on concrete steps toward restoring democratic rule and building national consensus. For investors and lenders, the outcome confirms that normalization with key African institutions remains contingent on both security de-escalation and a credible political transition.
