American Witness Testifies In Besigye Treason Trial
Kampala, August 26, 2026 - An American witness testified in the treason trial of opposition leader Kizza Besigye, a politically sensitive case with implications for Uganda's justice system and opposition politics.
The witness told court that cheap recording gadgets were used during a meeting involving Besigye and others. Asked about the subject of the discussion, the witness said it concerned an alleged assassination plot.
The proceedings involve Besigye, his aide Obeid Lutale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola. The prosecution is expected to present multiple witnesses as it seeks to prove the treason allegations.
The case is likely to remain closely watched because it touches on the treatment of leading opposition figures, the role of security institutions and broader perceptions of judicial independence in Uganda.
