Algeria Reaffirms Strategic Interest in Northern Mali

Sabri Boukadoum, Algerian Ambassador to the United States, underscored the deep historical, ethnic, and cultural ties between northern Mali and Algeria, describing the region as “a natural extension of Algeria: same ethnic groups, same people, same vision.” Speaking on November 19, Boukadoum emphasized that Algerian security is a national priority and firmly rejected any foreign interference at its borders, while advocating for inclusive dialogue to address the ongoing crisis in Mali.

The ambassador also characterized Mali as a “failed state,” highlighting the stark north-south divide: the northern regions suffer from a lack of resources and essential services, presenting a significant development deficit compared to southern Mali. Boukadoum stressed that these structural weaknesses make the north particularly vulnerable to terrorist exploitation, further threatening regional stability.

This statement reflects Algeria’s ongoing commitment to regional security and mediation in Mali, reaffirming its role as a key actor in addressing the Sahel-Saharan security and governance challenges.
