AFC/M23 Returns 5,000 FARDC Fighters to DRC Government

Kigali, March 8, 2026 - The AFC/M23 coalition, engaged in conflict with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government, announced the handover of more than 5,000 captured Wazalendo fighters and FARDC soldiers to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The handover ceremony took place on March 2, 2026, in Rumangabo, North Kivu, and the prisoners are to be transported to Kinshasa and returned to the DRC government, according to AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka.

The coalition described the move as a demonstration of its commitment to humanitarian principles, building trust between warring parties, and reducing hostilities.

However, Kanyuka criticized the Kinshasa government, claiming it has refused to release some fighters and other individuals allegedly detained illegally. “Although AFC/M23 is taking concrete measures to reduce the atmosphere of war, the Kinshasa government remains stubborn. It continues to refuse to release our comrades, arrested simply because of their appearance,” he said.

The coalition accused the government of violating the ceasefire agreement and targeting civilians and their property, urging peace negotiators and domestic and international partners to closely monitor compliance. Kanyu
