AES Pushes Forward Sahel Confederation Bank in Bamako Talks
Bamako, December 11, 2025 - Mali’s transitional president, General Assimi Goïta, on Wednesday received a high-level ministerial delegation from member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) at the Koulouba Palace, as efforts intensify to make the Confederation Bank for Investment and Development (BCID-AES) fully operational.
The delegation, mandated by AES leaders, discussed the bank’s role in financing strategic infrastructure projects and promoting self-reliant regional growth, seen as a cornerstone of the alliance’s economic vision. Priority sectors identified include transport, energy, and regional connectivity, areas considered vital for long-term stability and development in the Sahel.
Officials described the meeting as a decisive milestone in consolidating the AES as a sovereign economic bloc, while reaffirming Mali’s leadership within the alliance. If implemented as planned, the BCID-AES could channel critical funding into member states, reduce dependence on international financial institutions, and help restore investor confidence in the region.
Independent analysts have welcomed the renewed momentum, noting that the initiative aligns with the AES’s objective of deeper economic integration and autonomy. However, they also warned of significant challenges ahead. Persistent security constraints, including jihadist attacks and periodic blockades of supply routes, could slow implementation and ultimately threaten the bank’s viability if not effectively managed.
Despite these risks, Wednesday’s discussions underscore a shared political will among AES members to translate regional cooperation into concrete financial mechanisms capable of reshaping the Sahel’s economic future.
