$1.9 Million Seized at N’djili Airport in High-Stakes Operation

Kinshasa, March 22, 2026 - Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have seized approximately $1.9 million at N’djili International Airport, in a move described by the Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Guillaume Ngefa, as “lawful and complete.”

According to an official directive sent to the Prosecutor General at the Court of Cassation, the interception was carried out amid suspicions that the funds were intended to be unlawfully manipulated or distributed, in clear violation of Congolese law.

The minister’s letter highlights that such actions could constitute serious offenses, including embezzlement of seized assets, corruption, obstruction of justice, and money laundering. Judicial authorities were instructed to seize the money immediately, place it under official seal in the presence of judicial police officers, and document the circumstances thoroughly, including the identification of all individuals involved.

Under the law on combating money laundering and terrorism financing, the funds are to be deposited with the Central Bank of Congo, and the reports transmitted to the National Financial Intelligence Unit (CENAREF). The Minister also demanded a full legal investigation to determine the origin of the funds, classify potential criminal actions, and hold responsible parties accountable.

“This is a highly sensitive matter for public order and the credibility of our institutions,” the minister stated, emphasizing that any attempt by officials to handle or dispose of the funds outside the legal framework will be prosecuted with the utmost rigor.

The authorities have committed to keeping the public informed of the progress of the case.
