Bamako, December 10, 2025 - The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed Mali’s first reported case of smallpox, detected in November 2025, in its latest multi-country health alert.

The report emphasizes heightened risks in border regions with Burkina Faso and Niger and calls for vaccination of vulnerable populations alongside strengthened regional coordination through the Early Warning System.

Health authorities note that ongoing conflict and population displacement in Mali exacerbate the country’s vulnerability to infectious disease outbreaks, highlighting the urgent need for proactive public health measures.

WHO’s alert signals a renewed emphasis on disease surveillance, preparedness, and cross-border cooperation to prevent further spread.
