Walikale, July 6, 2026 - Four young men were reportedly killed on Sunday, July 5, in Ihula, located in the Kisimba area of Walikale territory, North Kivu, after being accused by AFC/M23 fighters of collaborating with Wazalendo self-defense groups. The deaths were confirmed by traditional authorities in the Kisimba area, who stated that the victims were allegedly executed before being buried on the same day in Ihula. According to local sources, AFC/M23 forces have increasingly accused residents in areas under their control of cooperating with either Wazalendo fighters or the Congolese armed forces (FARDC). These accusations have reportedly contributed to growing fear among local communities. Residents and traditional leaders also report that several civilians arrested in recent months over similar allegations remain missing, leaving families without information about their whereabouts or fate. In Kisimba and surrounding areas of Walikale territory, where AFC/M23 maintains control, inhabitants describe a deteriorating security environment marked by arrests, alleged abuses, and concerns over possible reprisals. No official reaction from AFC/M23 authorities regarding the allegations had been reported at the time of publication. The situation remains tense as local communities continue to call for protection and greater attention to civilian safety.
