Villages of Humura and Rutoboko Emptied After Clashes
Masisi, January 12, 2026 - The villages of Humura and Rutoboko, in the Nyamaboko 1 group (Osso Banyungu sector) of Masisi territory, North Kivu, have been abandoned by residents following clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and the Wazalendo. Residents began fleeing on Sunday, January 11, after fighting erupted near Kazinga. Fearing for their safety, families moved toward the Waloa Yungu group in Walikale territory. Several displaced families arrived in Langira and Chumba on Sunday evening and Monday. Many are being sheltered by host families, while others have taken refuge in schools and churches. According to information from the ground, the humanitarian situation is critical, as most people fled without their belongings. The displaced are urgently appealing for food assistance and temporary shelter to protect them from the elements.
