Uvira: Uncertainty Persists Over AFC/M23 Withdrawal
Uvira, South Kivu - December 18, 2025 - Uncertainty continues to surround the announced withdrawal of AFC/M23 fighters from the city of Uvira, despite claims by the armed group that its troops have begun leaving the area.
On Thursday, the security situation in Uvira remained calm, with no major incidents reported. Several witnesses indicated that AFC/M23 fighters were gradually withdrawing toward Kamanyola, their former positions, and vacating some houses they had occupied, particularly in the Nyamianda neighborhood.
However, doubts persist among residents, as some fighters were still observed inside the city and along roads leading toward the Burundi border, raising questions about whether the withdrawal is complete or partial.
Meanwhile, clashes between the AFC/M23 and the FARDC were reported on Wednesday in Fizi territory, notably around the villages of Kazimia, Some, and Sebele. The fighting triggered a mass displacement of civilians, mainly women and children, who fled the affected areas in search of safety.
Local authorities confirmed that the humanitarian situation in these areas remains fragile, as population movements continue amid ongoing insecurity.
