Two Civilians Killed in Clashes Between AFC/M23 and Unknown Armed Group
RUTSHURU - February 27, 2026 - Two civilians were killed on Thursday, February 26, during clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and an unidentified armed group in the JTN concession near Mwesso, Bwito chiefdom, North Kivu. Local sources reported that the confrontation erupted in the early evening when AFC/M23 patrols encountered armed men whose affiliation remains unclear. Heavy gunfire ensued across the agricultural and pastoral area, causing panic among nearby residents. The victims were identified as a young girl and a cattle herder, both struck by stray bullets. The incident also resulted in the death of twelve cows, impacting local herders whose livelihoods depend on livestock. This incident underscores the ongoing insecurity in Bwito chiefdom, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of sporadic clashes and the presence of multiple armed groups.
