Two Arrested for Bribery and Selling Substandard Alcohol
Ruhango, Rwanda - January 21, 2026 - The Rwanda National Police (RNP) arrested a 56-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman on suspicion of bribing security forces with 50,000 Rwf. The suspects were caught distilling and selling 780 liters of substandard alcohol known as Igikwangari. The operation, carried out by local authorities and the public, led to the immediate destruction of the liquor. CIP Kamanzi Hassan, police spokesperson for the Southern Province, confirmed that the individuals are detained at Byimana Police Station and that the Judicial Police have begun investigations. He reminded citizens that giving or receiving bribes and producing or selling substandard alcohol are criminal offenses and urged the public to report crimes promptly to prevent harm to communities.
