Ouagadougou, le 21 novembre 2025 - The Minister of Public Service, Labor, and Social Protection, Mathias Traoré, accompanied by his counterpart from the Ministry of Health, Robert Lucien Jean Claude Kargougou, held a press conference on Friday, November 21, 2025, in Ouagadougou to present the implementation of the Universal Health Insurance Scheme (RAMU). The session aimed to inform the public about the details of this major social protection mechanism for citizens of Burkina Faso.

Minister Traoré emphasized that less than 10% of the population currently benefits from social security coverage, while direct household health expenditures reach 34%, well above the maximum threshold of 20% set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to him, the RAMU (Universal Health Coverage Scheme) offers a structured solution enabling every citizen to access healthcare without financial hardship, while integrating with existing social security systems and allowing citizens the option to purchase supplemental private insurance.

These services will be provided in healthcare facilities that have signed agreements with the National Universal Health Insurance Fund (CNAMU), covering both public and private sectors.

Public sector employees: 5% of gross salary

Self-employed workers in the formal sector: 15,000 CFA francs/month

Workers in the informal sector: 4,000 CFA francs/month

Government contribution: 4,000 CFA francs/month for low-income individuals

Benefits will commence on February 1, 2026, initially targeting civil servants in the Kadiogo and Guiriko regions, after at least three months of contributions. Registration is open at CNAMU headquarters in Ouaga 2000 and at the regional offices of labor and social protection.
