Terrorist Attack Near Bamako Leaves Civilians and Soldiers Dead

BAMAKO, Mali - The security situation in central Mali deteriorated further this week following a deadly ambush less than 200 kilometers from the capital. On Wednesday, October 1, armed extremist groups attacked public transport vehicles on the Bamako-Ségou highway that were under military escort.

According to local sources, all members of the escort were killed in the assault, along with several civilians. Among the victims were the wife and two children of the president of the Mopti Administrative Court, who died at the scene. The court’s judge, also among the passengers, sustained gunshot wounds but is reported to be in stable condition.

In total, at least six civilians were confirmed dead, though the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have not released an official casualty count for their personnel. The assailants later published images online displaying weapons allegedly seized during the attack - a move consistent with their propaganda tactics aimed at demonstrating battlefield dominance.

The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by militant groups operating across central Mali, even within proximity of Bamako, and highlights the ongoing challenge of securing major transportation routes linking the capital to regional centers.
