Tensions Rise Between Senegalese and Malian Transport Authorities
Bamako/Dakar, January 12-22, 2026 - Friction is emerging between the Senegalese Minister of Transport and his Malian counterpart over Malian containers and equipment abandoned at the Port of Dakar for over two months. According to Senegalese authorities, the port is operating at full capacity, prompting pressure on Mali to urgently recover its goods. The situation is linked to the de facto closure of the Senegal-Mali border, controlled by armed terrorist groups, which has prevented safe transport. Mali’s request for Senegalese military escorts to move goods through high-risk areas was reportedly refused, leaving containers stuck and creating growing congestion. Sources from the Malian Ministry of Transport say discussions are ongoing, with authorities seeking alternative solutions to clear the backlog. Updates are expected as the situation evolves.
