Teacher Strikes Disrupt School Reopening in Mali

BAMAKO, Mali - Classes resumed across Mali on October 1, but strikes by teachers in several regions have disrupted the school year. The protest stems from unpaid September salaries, with affected employees reportedly listed as “fictitious civil servants” following a government audit.

The audit initially flagged more than 35,000 names, but subsequent verification revealed errors, with many legitimate civil servants mistakenly categorized and denied pay. In response, the Minister of Territorial Administration ordered the release of salaries for teachers who could provide registration receipts.

Despite these measures, union committees in multiple localities have continued their strike until all affected educators receive full payment.
