Stephen Patrick Mbundi Appointed Secretary-General of the East African Community
Arusha, March 7, 2026 - Ambassador Stephen Patrick Mbundi has been appointed Secretary-General of the East African Community (EAC), replacing Kenyan diplomat Veronica Nduva, who held the position since 2024. The appointment was made during the 25th General Assembly of the EAC, where Mbundi was named for a five-year term from 2026 to 2031. The EAC statement highlighted that he is expected to strengthen diplomatic cooperation among member states and enhance the cohesion of the regional community. Following the announcement, Mbundi was sworn in before the General Assembly of Heads of State and immediately assumed his duties. Prior to this appointment, he served as Permanent Secretary in charge of EAC Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania.
