South Kivu: Violent Clashes Between FARDC and AFC/M23 Trigger Humanitarian Crisis in the Ruzizi Plain
South Kivu, DRC - Violent clashes erupted at dawn on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, in the Kaziba chiefdom, Walungu territory, pitting the FARDC against AFC/M23 rebels following a strategic repositioning of both sides in the highlands.
The fighting, marked by heavy gunfire and the use of heavy weapons, is concentrated around Nguka Hill, plunging the towns of Katogota, Luvungi, Lubarika, and Kamanyola into panic. A shell struck a house in Kamanyola, further escalating fears among residents.
The population, sheltering in their homes, faces a critical humanitarian situation: roads are cut off, supplies are blocked, and access for NGOs is difficult in an area already ravaged by years of insecurity.
Local stakeholders are urgently calling on authorities to restore security to prevent a further deterioration of the situation.
