South Kivu: more than 118,000 cases of mental disorders recorded in the first half of 2025

On World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2025, the South Kivu Provincial Health Division revealed that 118,379 cases of mental disorders had been recorded in the first half of the year. Among them, 10,888 cases of post-traumatic stress disorder, 6,171 cases of depression, 2,437 cases of drug addiction and 93 suicides were recorded.

This report highlights the impact of armed conflict, poverty and violence on the psychological health of populations, particularly women and children. Health authorities are calling for the urgent integration of mental health into primary health care in order to strengthen prevention, treatment and community awareness.
