South Kivu, December 5, 2025

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) forces launched heavy attacks on AFC/M23-controlled areas in South Kivu Province on the morning of December 5, 2025. The offensive involved DRC, Burundian, and Wazalendo troops, targeting Katogota Center in Uvira District and Kamanyola in Walungu District.

In response, AFC/M23 fighters shelled Itara-Luvungi Gurupoma, an area under DRC government control. DRC forces also targeted Ngomo Hill near Kamanyola, sending thick black smoke into the air and reportedly hitting a Vodacom telecommunications tower.

Heavy fighting has been ongoing since December 2 in the Rusizi and Walungu valleys, with both sides employing heavy weapons. On December 4, a special AFC/M23 unit attacked Burundian army positions, resulting in multiple casualties and the capture of several soldiers.

Additionally, AFC/M23 fighters were spotted traveling by boat from Goma to Bukavu, intending to join their comrades in the conflict.

The escalation reflects continued instability in South Kivu and underscores the challenges of enforcing peace and security in the region.
